SERIES 1

couple.png

The series begins with a documentary photograph of a Dalit woman in a precarious setting. An AI describes the image, then reimagines it from its own description; the loop repeats, and with each pass the portrayal slides further from its origin. Early on, the subject is subtly re-coded from South Asian to Indigenous North American, before the drift continues. Bias accumulates in plain sight: skin tones lighten, features and styling are smoothed into sameness, family figures are introduced, and the lived context is stripped away in favor of a Western, middle-class ideal. By the final frame, she has been rewritten as an idealized white, blonde mother with two children, making the system’s pull toward “the norm” unmistakable.

In the interface just below, hover and scroll down to follow the drift step by step. As you move through the iterations, the original image gradually transforms, while the AI’s self-generated description appears alongside it. Bias-prone words are highlighted as they enter the text and accumulate across the sequence. When you reach the end, a short animation gathers all highlighted terms, revealing the full vocabulary that shaped the drift.
